Terminology

New fans of the series may be unfamiliar with some of the words used in the InuYasha universe, and perhaps this is a good review for older fans as well. This site will interchange between using the Japanese words, and its English meaning [although I do try to stay consistant]. This list will [hopefully] prevent any confusion.

Miko - Japanese word meaning shrine maiden; Kikyou
Hanyou - half human, half demon; InuYasha
Youkai - Japanese word meaning demon; Sesshoumaru
Daiyoukai - especially strong and powerful youkai, Inu no Taisho
Shouki - miasma
Kotodama no Nenju - beads of subjegation, used for the "Sit" command on InuYasha
Osuwari - the "Sit" command used by Kagome
Hama no Ya - "Sacred Arrows", used by Kikyou and Kagome
Houshi - low ranked Buddist monk
Kazaana - Wind Tunnel
Youkai Taiji-ya - Demon Slayer, Sango
Kitsune - fox demon, Shippou
Nintoujou - Staff of Heads, used by Jaken
Shakujo - Holy Staff used by Miroku
Ane-ue - respectful term for sister, used by Kohaku towards Sango
Chichi-ue - term for father
Oni - ogre
Okami - wolf demon, Kouga
Saimyoushou - Hell Wasps used by Naraku
